In many countries, Valentines Day is a day where couples exchange gifts and go on dates, or both men and women give gifts to the person they like. 💗
However, in Japan, Valentines Day is a day where only girls give gifts! Girls will give gifts (usually chocolate) to the person they like, but they also give chocolate to their friends called "tomochoco" 友チョコ literally meaning "friend chocolate".
But there's one more type of chocolate gift that some women aren't too keen on... This is called "giri choco" 義理チョコ lit "obligation chocolate".
In Japan, Valentine 's Day was popular since about 1958.
Based on Japanese confectionery companies, "Advertising chocolate for loved ones on Valentine's Day" was advertised, and the campaign was launched, it seems to be Japan's own custom.
Overseas, both men and women are given a gift such as flowers and cakes for lovers and close friends.
It is Japan's own style to confess a woman giving chocolate to a man.
