Pets are popular in Japan, but often when searching for apartments you will come accross "PET不可" or "PET可", but what does this mean? The first is no pets allowed whilst the second is pets allowed. Despite the sheer amount of pet owners here though, it can actually be pretty difficult to find a place that will accept your furry companion.
When you do find a place that will accept pets, it normally comes with restrictions too. For example; small dogs only, or 1 small pet only. Often you will have to pay an extra month or twos deposit in the case you have a pet.How do people living in Japan get around this? Often times, they just don't inform the landlord that they have a pet. This really isn't a good idea, should your landlord find out you could face eviction.
So what should you do? Be clear with your agent that you have or intend to keep a pet and only chose an apartment where pets are OK! This may cost you a bit of extra money in the short term, but you don't want to take the risk of being evicted over your pet.
