Navigating the property market in Japan as a foreigner can be difficult, let alone when you can't speak Japanese. So today we're going to teach you some important vocabulary so you can navigate the market easier. To start off with, the following 4 words are probably the words you'll come accross most often. 物件 (bukken) property/listing 不動産 (fudousan) real estate agent 賃貸 (chintai) rental 分譲 (bunjou) purchase.
Here are some types of properties you can expect to come across on the market. 家 (ie) house, 一戸建て(ikkodate) detached house, アパート (apaato) apartment マンション (manshon) mansion; referring to a newer apartment whereas apaato tends to refer to an older building , and シェアハウス (shea hausu) share house. You'll often see the abbreviations like 2LDK or 1K and this refers to the layout of the property. 2LDK means 2 rooms and a living/dining/kitchen space whereas 1K is 1 room with a kitchen. Then of course the size of the property is in meters squared, but some old fashioned places might use tatami mats to measure the size of a property. 1 tatami mat is equal to 1.5 square meters, so a 6畳 (jou) is 9 meters squared.
